Li Chong
Born and raised in Malaysia, Li Chong moved to the United States with her family at the age of 15, eventually settling in Boston where she completed her education before earning a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During her time at UMASS, she was selected for a study abroad program at the DCT School of Culinary and Hospitality Management in Switzerland, an experience that broadened both her perspective and her passion for hospitality.
After graduation, Li began her career in hotels before realizing her true connection was to restaurants, where hospitality felt more immediate, personal, and human-centered. She transitioned fully into restaurant service, working her way through leadership roles in Boston before later relocating to California. Following several years focused on raising her daughters, she returned to hospitality with a renewed sense of purpose, eventually joining Allora in its early years.
What began as a serving position at Allora evolved into a pivotal chapter in her career. Over the course of five years, Li grew into leadership roles within the restaurant, becoming both manager and assistant sommelier while helping shape the guest experience and service culture that defined the restaurant. During this time, she also deepened her wine education through the Italian Wine Scholar program and earned her Level 1 certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers, continuing her independent study of wines from around the world.
A significant influence in Li’s journey has been the mentorship of Elizabeth-Rose Mandalou, whose guidance encouraged her growth not only within hospitality, but personally as a leader and woman in the industry. That experience strengthened Li’s confidence, discipline, and commitment to continuous growth.
Today, as General Manager of Aiona, Li leads with a deeply personal and relationship-driven approach to hospitality. She believes guests return not simply for food or atmosphere, but for the way an experience makes them feel. Her goal is for every guest who walks through Aiona’s doors to feel genuinely welcomed, recognized, and cared for, as though they are entering the home of a close friend.
Known for her professionalism, attention to detail, and calm leadership style, Li is deeply committed to building a team culture rooted in communication, trust, and mutual support. She approaches hospitality with the belief that great service is never created by one person alone, but through a unified team working together with intention and care.
Outside of the restaurant, Li finds grounding in family, quiet routines, and continued learning. Her passion for wine remains a constant source of inspiration, connecting her love of culture, travel, and storytelling to the work she does each day in hospitality.
